What you're looking at
Each dot is an airport weather station, coloured by flight category from its latest report:
- VFR (green): ceiling above 3,000 ft and visibility above 5 statute miles.
- MVFR (blue): ceiling 1,000 to 3,000 ft and/or visibility 3 to 5 miles.
- IFR (red): ceiling 500 to 999 ft and/or visibility 1 to under 3 miles.
- LIFR (magenta): ceiling below 500 ft and/or visibility below 1 mile.
A dot that flickers like lightning means its latest report includes a thunderstorm or lightning; the flicker is fainter when the lightning is distant. The layers button adds radar, satellite, SIGMETs, G-AIRMETs and pilot reports.
Zoomed out, only major airports are shown; zooming in reveals smaller fields. Select an airport to read its current report (METAR), forecast (TAF) and the last 12 hours of reports, either as coded or decoded into plain English.
Data and updates
Weather comes from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Aviation Weather Center, which publishes reports from stations around the world. This site copies NOAA's data feeds about once a minute; most stations report hourly, with special reports when conditions change. Each report shows its observation time. Flight categories and decoded text are calculated by this site.
